Supporting Success for Adult Learners
Summary: In this workshop, we will examine learning difference, difficulty, and disability issues that impact adult learners in our literacy programs. Reflecting current research and resources for adults, we will examine standards and strategies as we focus on ways to support success for all learners.
Part I – Overview of Learning Issues
- What do we know about barrier issues for adults?
- What are learning disabilities? How can we recognize them in adult learners?
- Screening and Evaluation
- Rights and Responsibilities - Legal Issues
- Generational Issues
- What do we need to know about all learners? (Identifying Multiple Intelligences)
Part II – Promoting Learning
- Accommodations and Modifications
- Meeting Standards
- Strategies to Meet Diverse Learning Needs
- Using authentic text
- Resources for Students and Teachers (text, print, online, etc.)
Part III – Participatory Learning
Using the principles of participatory learning, we will explore topics such as student orientation and goal set-ting, selecting authentic and relevant materials, and the value of project-based learning.
Part IV – Developing a Reading Profile
Using Assessment Strategies and Reading Profiles (ASRP) developed by the National Institute for Lit-eracy, we will explore ways to develop a reading profile to assess the components of reading for each stu-dent.
Dates: Friday, February 12 – 8:30-4:30 and Saturday, February 13 – 9:00-1:00

Credits: Eleven Continuing Professional Education Credits (CPE’s) for Texas teachers and One CEU (ten hours of instruction) for social workers will be awarded.
This workshop builds upon Bridges to Practice and is expanded to include current research and re-sources on topics in adult literacy. Adult literacy teachers, volunteers, and administrators at every level will have the opportunity to examine issues and explore strategies to support adult learners.
